Applications of hydrogen
Industry has safely used it for decades in all kinds of applications, from refining petrol to making semi-conductors, fertiliser and pharmaceuticals. It has also used hydrogen where it is produced as a fuel to generate low carbon energy. It can be used everywhere. To heat our homes, fuel our transport, power and supply our industry. Wherever it is used, hydrogen can help enormously to cut CO2 emissions – and help to meet the demands of the landmark Paris Climate Agreement – when championed by governments throughout the world and embraced by the public. Buses, powered by hydrogen fuel cells, are now regularly seen on city streets in Germany, the UK, China, Canada and the US. Hydrogen-powered trains are also running in Germany.
